Tempe (pronounced Tem'pee) is a city located in Maricopa County, Arizona. As
of the 2000 census, the
city had a total population of 158,625. Darrell Duppa is usually credited with
suggesting the name,
adopted in 1879, after comparing the Salt River valley near a 300-foot-tall
butte to the Vale of Tempe
near Mount Olympus in Greece. Duppa also had the honor of giving name to
Phoenix, Arizona, 11 years
earlier.
Tempe is the location of the head offices of US Airways and the main campus of
Arizona State
University.
Tempe is a two time winner of the All-America City Award given annually by the
National Civic
League in 1984/85 and 2003/2004
Tempe is the site of one of the nation's biggest New Years Eve Parties. It was
also the site of one of the
three Presidential debates in 2004.
There are 63,602 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18
living with them,
38.4% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with
no husband present,
and 47.1% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals
and 4.6% have
someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size
is 2.41 and the
average family size is 3.05.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 21.3%
from 18 to 24, 33.2%
from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median age is 29
years. For every 100 females there are 106.9 males. For every 100 females age 18
and over, there are
107.1 males.
